BCC Student Union Renovation, El Dorado, KS

Description:
The Butler Community College Student Union (Building 1000) was originally built in 1965 and was added on to numerous times over the years, which created a large amount of inefficient circulation space. The college decided to update the facility to make it more usable and selected LK Architecture to regenerate the facility into a modern student center.
The facility houses both the campus Book Store and dining services. The plan created a point of focus for those approaching the facility. The facility’s main entrance was at grade, and upon entering, one had to immediately choose one of two directions and proceed up steps to access any of the ammenities within. A new raised plaza was created outside this original entry with ADA ramps adjacent to the stairs, which lead into a new vestibule. The vestibule then leads directly into a welcoming lobby that is adjacent to the Book Store, dining facility, lounge, study/computer areas and meeting facilities. The Book Store was enlarged to provide easier access and better sales service to the students. The kitchen was completely redesigned and enlarged to better serve students who previously had to stand in one serving line. The dining facility was updated with new finishes and laid out with various sized tables and seating areas. The existing snack bar was relocated from a remote location to being adjacent to the serving lines so that snacks were available at all times. The old snack bar area was converted into study lounges and meeting areas. The final facility provides an updated, welcoming and vibrant location for students’ use.
