Catholic Charities Adult Day Services renovated the former Michener Elementary School into a new adult daycare facility for Wichita’s Catholic Charities. The new building replaces the existing Adult Day Services which serves adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, along with seniors experiencing dementia and the early stages of Alzheimer’s. The new Adult Day Services building provides a space for up to about 200 program participants including outdoor play yards with equipment specifically designed for adults with disabilities. The former school gymnasium became the new cafeteria and multi-purpose room, with a naturally lit courtyard area.
The Catholic Charities program, which has operated in Wichita since 1975, offers day-time activities designed to enrich the clients’ lives, as well as provide life skills and education, including taking clients out into the community. The program usually serves between 80 and 95 clients a day, which come from a variety of areas.
