The concept for the park is rooted in innovative placemaking. This project has very limited funding sources and ideas from “pop-up” parks were of great inspiration to the design. Additionally, it was determined early on that the community would need to come together both financially as well as lending labor and expertise to the creation of this public space. The master plan that emerged is a roadmap to realizing the steering committee’s vision for a space for all ages active throughout the day and year.
The stage features space for performers (greenroom) which can be utilized as a small pavilion during regular park operation. The upper container also provides space for a large, outdoor screen for movies and events. This “structure” also provides a small area for concessions which can be served during events at the park.
At the south end of the park, a second “structure” was created using containers for restrooms and a two-level pavilion. This area was envisioned as a leasable space as well as a place where parents could come while children play. The park design also includes a nature play area, open lawn and berm. All these spaces were arranged to encourage activity throughout the park. On-street angled parking was added to minimize using park area for cars and space was planned for food trucks. Throughout the park, opportunities were identified for where the community could accomplish as much of the work as possible creating a park not only for the community but by the community.
