LK Architecture provided on-call architectural and engineering services on a number of facility improvements at Vulcan Chemicals. Those projects included:
Of all of the projects completed at Vulcan Chemicals, the 25,000 SF Research and Development Laboratory is the center of operations for this secured manufacturing campus. The labs’ primary function is to test gas and liquid chemical compounds produced at the plant, research and design new gas and liquid chemical compounds for industrial uses world-wide as well as develop processes, procedures and storage protocols for industrial chemicals produced at the plant.
The 3-level building includes product testing laboratories and offices on the second level, research and development laboratories and offices on the first level and locker rooms, industrial chemical product storage, building utility systems with exposed Pyrex sanitary piping for monitoring and mitigating discharge of the various corrosive chemical compounds produced at the plant. The facility also includes an enclosed settlement containment pit for storage of volatile compounds awaiting disposal in off site hazardous waste facilities. The testing center evaluates samples of all chemical compounds produced at the plan on a daily basis through a high energy electrolysis process. The laboratories included isolated testing modules, fume hoods with air scrubbers, and table/counters topped with Bakelite topping to resist chemical corrosion.
