Description:

The Wichita Country Club recognized the need to upgrade their dining and bar areas.

LK interviewed for the job and was awarded the project with its vision for a new upscale dining and bar facility which would also feature covered outdoor seating.

LK created a wonderful facility using warm natural materials and large glass openings providing great views of the golf course and practice facility. These large glass openings were protected from the South and West sun with generous roof overhangs and sunscreens which allow the views without allowing the sun to encroach into the space.

The building was designed to reflect the character of the existing building while literally elevating that design to new heights. The dining room features 24’ tall ceilings with large chandeliers. The bar seating area steps down to 18’ tall ceilings while the bar itself has 12’ tall ceilings.

The generous bar features indoor and outdoor seating with operable bar windows which would allow club members to sit outdoors while being up at the bar which is inside.

These wonderful interior areas are surrounded by large outdoor covered patios which are protected with floor to ceiling bug screens, gas-fired heaters and large ceiling fans for comfortable outdoor dining under most conditions.

The building materials are drawn from the existing facility with natural stone walls, red tile mansard roofs and a large eave detail which reflects the original design. Each space is celebrated beneath exposed wood ceiling beams and abundant natural light. Natural wood floors and warm patterned carpet are used on the floor to complete the finishes.

The bar area and the private dining room are separated from the large dining room to allow for sound control between the spaces. A special sound absorbing ceiling and upper wall panels were employed to control sound both within and outside each space.

The overall design is successful because it truly reflects the character, history and status of Wichita’s oldest Country Club.
